A Week Later

It’s been nearly three weeks since bringing Prinie and Koda home. They’re both settling back into their routines. Koda’s been enrolled in school which goes back after spring break. Prinie’s prancing around the clubhouse like she owns it—it’s as if she never left—while I try to keep everything in motion.

Chains and Chills are settling in. Baby Kobe’s pretty damn cute when he’s not crying.

Ruby’s found her rhythm as a club girl, and Luc’s a damn good prospect. So, with that in mind, we’re promoting Cannon from prospect to full patch.

Dipshit just doesn’t know it yet.

“Everything’s in position,” Wraith tells me on the down-low.

I turn around bringing my fingers to my lips, sending a loud whistle reverberating through the main room. “Everyone, gather ‘round.”

My brothers, club girls, and everyone else turn to look at me, then they head to the middle of the main room. The hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention—I know Rayne’s near. I glance to my left, and she’s making her way in with the others. Fuck, she’s even more stunning than when she first came here. The bruises on her face are slowly fading making her beauty even more noticeable. I’ve been steering clear of her this past week.

I’m sure she’s detected the distance between us, but I had to do it, though the draw to her, that pull, that energy I feel for her is getting stronger.

A scraping chair along the middle of the concrete floor pulls my attention back to the matter at hand. I focus on what I need to do right now.

“Cannon, get over here.”

“Sure thing, pres,” Cannon fires back, racing over as Wraith places the chair in the center of the room.

I grab Cannon by the scruff, forcing him to sit on the chair. His eyes scrunch in confusion as everyone observes the scene playing out. “I’ve been monitoring you, Cannon. Your eyes are always so attuned, so fixated. You’re constantly watching. Always focused on the bigger picture.” Cannon’s eyes fall to Prinie. Everyone knows Cannon was tasked to protect her and Koda this last year—everyone except Prinie and Koda. “Loyalty and trust are big issues in Defiance. If we can’t trust those bothers around us, then they don’t belong in the brotherhood at all.”

“Here, here,” my brothers all call out making Cannon swallow a nervous lump down his throat.

A bead of sweat rolls down his temple as I circle him.

“The thing we’ve been trying to figure out, Cannon, is… can we trust you?”

He flashes his eyes around the room like he’s trying to find a way out.

“Can we, Cannon? Can we trust you?” I goad.

Kid’s scared out of his brain. Just one more taunt, and I’ll put him out of his misery. “Is there anything you wanna tell me, Cannon? Now’s the time to confess.”

His eyes widen as he sits taller like he has no idea what I’m talking about. His eyes shoot to Prinie.

Whatever he’s going to blurt out in his fear might be about her.
